LOS ANGELES (AP) - The U.S. Senate has unanimously confirmed the nation's first Vietnamese-American woman to serve on the federal bench.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Nguyen (nuh-WEN') will become a member of the U.S. District Court in California's Central District in downtown Los Angeles following her confirmation on Tuesday.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., says Nguyen has a track record of success as both a judge and a federal prosecutor.

Nguyen is a former assistant U.S. attorney specializing in corruption and fraud.

She fled Vietnam in 1975, lived for several months in a Marine Corps tent at Camp Pendleton, and grew up in La Crescenta working at her family's doughnut shop after school.

Nguyen graduated from Occidental College in 1987 and got her law degree from UCLA.
