Associated Press - July 21, 2010 6:14 PM ET

DENVER (AP) - 1 of the passengers on board a Los Angeles-bound flight that left at least 22 injured after hitting severe turbulence says "Everyone was quite panicked."

The 19-year-old passenger on United Flight 967 from the Washington, D.C.-area says, "The whole plane felt like it was dropping," adding it was "a bit chaotic" in the cabin.

The plane was diverted to Denver after hitting the turbulence over Missouri Tuesday night. None of the injuries appears serious.

One witness says a woman was thrown out of her seat and hit her head against the ceiling. Another hit her head on the wall, leaving a crack near the window.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating and say it's a top priority to figure out what happened.
