Gunman Kills Two First Responders
Authorities in Webster, NY say 62-year old William Spengler killed two firefighters and injured two others in a shooting ambush he had set up.
Firefighters came under fire when they responded to a fire at a home owned by Spengler's sister. All units pulled back from the scene once Spengler began shooting. After exchanging fire with police officers from a nearby berm, authorities say Spengler took his own life.
While firefighters were away from the shooting, six more homes were engulfed by flames, making a total of seven homes destoryed in the morning fire.
Spengler had spent 17 yers in prison for killing his grandmother with a hammer in 1980. Authorities have yet to find a motive for this recent attack.
