INDIO - Candace Duran will spend 12 years in prison for the 2007 killing of handyman Howard Villaneuva. The sentence was handed down in an Indio court this afternoon.
Duran, 25, was originally charged with murder in the stabbing death of Villanueva in her Palm Springs home.
Duran also pleaded guilty to felony charges in three other cases, including possesson of a controlled substance, robbery and receiving stolen property. She was sentenced to an additional three years in prison for those crimes.
Defense attorneys tried to paint a picture of a then 19-year-old Duran defending herself from a much older male attacker.
Prosecutors argued that Duran's stabbing of Villanueva was brtual, violent and not consistent with self-defense.
