Charles Vasquez faces multiple embezzlement charges

INDIO - Cathedral City Mayor Pro Tem Charles Vasquez pleaded not guilty to three counts of embezzlement this morning. The allegations are the Vasquez misused monies from a program to reimburse city employees for new computer purchases.
The three counts of embezzlement by a public official are felony charges. He's expected to return to court on August 14th.
Currently, Vasquez is free on $50,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison.
Investigators say that from August 2011 to December 2012, Vasquez misused the program and used city funds for personal purchases. He allegedly used some of the funds for computer purchases, and the remainder for personal items. The affidavit alleges that Vasquez also used a city credit card to purchase $2,000 worth of MasterCard gift cards.
