Same Sex Marriages on Hold in Riverside County
PALM DESERT - Following today's US Supreme Court Ruling on Prop 8, the Riverside County County Clerk's office put out the following media release about same sex marriages in the county:
The U.S. Supreme Court today (June 26) issued a ruling in the case of Hollingsworth v. Perry that effectively dismissed the case on Prop. 8. The matter has been sent back to the lower court where the decision overturning Prop. 8 was issued. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit would have to lift a stay it previously issued in the case before the Riverside County Clerk can issue marriage licenses to same sex couples based on today’s Supreme Court decision.
The County Clerk cannot issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples until the office receives direction from the state that the stay has been lifted. The County Clerk will continue to monitor the issue and keep the public informed of any changes.
You can download an application for a marriage license here. The clerk's office encourages couples to complate this application in advance of arriving at the clerk's office.
