Arizona Mourns Loss of 19 Firefighters; Two From Hemet
PALM DESERT - 19 firefighters were killed Sunday while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire in Northwest Arizona.
They were part of an elite squad known as HitShots who confront wildfires on the front line. They work to set up barriers to stop the spreading destruction. But in their unpredictable world, it doesn't take much to turn a situation deadly. That;s apparently what happened Sunday when the winds shifted and the group was overrun by fire.
Officials say the firefighters deployed their tent-like shelters of last resort. They did not save them.
KMIR6 News has learned that at least 2 of the firefighters were from the Inland Empire. We are speaking with the mother of one and will have her story tonight at 5 & 6pm.
