PS Man Arraigned for "Hate Burglaries"
Allegations burglar chose targets based on racial and sexual factors
26-year-old Paul Claudio Piermartiri pleaded not guilty to three counts of burglary with allegations of choosing his targets based on race or sexual preference.
Piermartiri was arrested Friday morning in Palm Springs while receiving medical attention for an injury he suffered during his third burglary of the evening.
Police say Piermartiri was in the process of burglarizing a home in the 400 block of Bella Cara Way in Palm Springs, when the homeowner awoke - forcing Piermartiri to flee the scene. Officers say that was how the burglar injured himself.
While searching for Piermartiri, police discovered that two other homes had been burglarized.
After talking with the suspect, the investigators were led to believe that Piermartiri had committed the burglaries and chose the victims based on ethnicity and sexual orientation.
His bail is set at $100,000.
