A 41-year-old hispanic man was struck and killed by a pick-up truck on Saturday night as
he rode his bicycle down HWY 111 in Rancho Mirage.
Police say he was traveling against the flow of traffic, riding his bike eastbound in the
westbound lanes on HWY 111.
"That's unusual, normally if I ride a bike I go with the flow of traffic and do it in daylight."
Resident Terry Wells said. "If he's going the wrong way, I'm terribly sorry but he should
have known better."
"It's sad to hear that people aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing," said Palm
Desert resident Reagan Cotter." I guess he was going the wrong direction but you know its sad, there is lighting out there
and i know he shouldn't have been doing it but it is sad."
The red pick-up truck that hit the man was traveling westbound when the accident happened.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was thrown from his bicycle at the corner
of Atrium Way and HWY 111. He died on the scene.
"I would never ride on 111 but you know there's a lot of great roads that aren't the mainstream
roads to ride around here," Cotter said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation and police aren't saying who was at fault.
It's also unknown if alcohol was a factor and if the victim was wearing a helmet.
"I'm very sorry this man was killed but the average bicycle rider doesn't ride at 11 O'clock
at night," Wells said.
The investigation is on-going and police want to remind all bicycle riders to travel with the
flow of traffic and always wear a helmet.
