DESERT CENTER - A crash and fire involving two big rigs on Interstate 10 outside Desert Center Friday left three people hurt and forced the closure of the westbound lanes.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at 1:41 p.m. on westbound I-10 at Red Cloud Mine Road.

CHP says, the westbound I-10 between Blythe and Red Cloud Mine Road was expected to be closed until about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The eastbound side was temporarily closed earlier this afternoon to allow a helicopter to set down to airlift a patient to a hospital.

The county fire department reported that two others were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

CHP officers are telling drivers to take alternate routes like Highway 177 or Highway 62.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
