PALM DESERT - One man is behind bars, and another in the hospital after a stabbing in Palm Desert. Both men are football teammates at the College of the Desert.

Police say an arguement between two teammates turned into a very real fight and stabbing Thursday night.

Witnesses say the stabbing happened at the tennis court at the Desert Oasis Apartments in Palm Desert.

Police say Jaime Smith stabbed a 19-year old teammate multiple times. Officials say the victim was seriously hurt but the stab wounds don't appear life-threatening.

Initially Sheriff's investigators thought the fight may have started because Smith transferred from out-of-state and took a starting position from other players on the team but College of the Desert's head football coach says that's not the case.

Coach Dowty says both players are fourth stringers in different poistions: One a linebacker, the other a safety.

Officers told us late Friday that the fight did not start over a starting position, instead it was over items that Smith took from the victim.

But the head coach says the team will still hit the field with practice Friday night and their season opener game Saturday night against Mount San Jacinto Community College.
