Rescue Mission in Desperate Need of Holiday Donations
Volunteers unload crates of food at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, donations, great but need even greater.
"I just spoke to a lady coming out of my office who doesn't have any food so it's a choice you either pay your rent or you buy food," said Executive Director of Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, Darla Burkett.
More people in need of food day to day, even more on holidays like Thanksgiving.
"The economy is still waiting to come back a little bit and the need is still great out there," said Cameron Bridges from Martha's Village and Kitchen.
Marthas Village and Kitchen still needs 400 turkeys, The Galilee Center needs about 300 and at Coachella Valley Rescue Mission more than 500 people lined up for turkeys this morning, one hundred of them walked away empty handed.
"We did have to turn some people away this morning yes," Burkett said. "I still have many people calling and we just don't have any turkeys left, we're completely out at this point."
"We need a lot of turkeys," volunteer Jim Nault said. "We need about 400 turkeys by Thursday so we need everyone to come out and give us some turkeys."
Jim is one of hundreds of volunteers already in the kitchen prepping 800 pounds of potatoes and the hundreds of turkeys they do have for thursdays holiday feast.
"We've seen a large increase in the numbers we serve, it's kind of scary," volunteer Barbara Flores said.
Missions scared they won't have enough turkey. Doing their best to pull off a Thankgiving with all the trimmings, hoping last minute donations will be enough to feed the thousands in need.
It only takes 10 dollars to feed 5 people this Thanksgiving..
