PALM DESERT - It's the season of giving but some people are experiencing the opposite. Theives stealing presents and belongings from cars and homes.

Locking your doors and setting the alarm are of course two ways to protect yourself at home and in your car. Especially this time of year when people get desperate for those holiday gifts.

'Tis the season to be jolly but some scrooges out there are putting a real damper on the holiday spirit. Breaking into cars and homes in this Palm Desert neighborhood.

Norma McVeigh is taking extra precautions, bright lights out front, and even an alarm system. Things neighbor Betty Vreede also does to protect her family.

Neighbors also say they've seen people going from car to car checking for unlocked doors.

Thieves always choosing the path of least resistance.

So remember, lock your doors, even your windows and sliding doors, turn your outside lights on, and if you're going out of town let police know and they'll keep an extra eye on your home. It's also important to report any suspicous activity to police.
