RANCHO MIRAGE - The owner of the building that housed GG's Island Restaurant is calling Tuesday morning's fire a "sad, sad tragedy." Palm Srings based property developer John Wessman tells KMIR6 News the loss of such a historic landmark is a horrible tragedy.

At least two firefighters were injured while battling the early morning blaze at GG's Island Restaurant in Rancho Mirage. The injuries were minor, according to fire officials at the scene Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out at the landmark restaurant just before 4 A.M. and closed a section of Highway 111 near Frank Sinatra Drive for several hours. All roads were reopen by 8:35 A.M., according to Capt. Mike Smith, a fire department spokesman.

Firefighters gained control of the blaze within an hour, but it took a several hours to put the fire completely out. Fire officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The owners of GG's Island Restaurant echoed the sentiment of the building owner, calling the devastating fire a sad loss. They spoke with KMIR6's Jessica Flores Tuesday morning at the scene of the fire.
