PALM DESERT - Work is beginning on the fourth phase of drainage and intersection improvements on Cook Street.

On Wednesday, January 18, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., workers will be reinstalling traffic signal poles and mast arms at the intersection of Cook Street and Country Club Drive.

This is a major undertaking involving heavy cranes. Motorists in all directions will be affected and traffic could be stopped completely for periods of up to 30 minutes. The signals at Country Club and Cook will be turned off and four-way stop signs will be in place while work is taking place.

Also on January 18, workers will be applying base paving in the middle of the intersection at Cook and Hovley Lane East. Left turn pockets and far left (number one) lanes in both directions on Cook will be closed.

Due to significant anticipated delays, motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes such as Portola Avenue and Fred Waring Drive.

The nearly $3 million project to improve traffic flow and drainage on Cook Street between Hovley and Country Club Drive is expected to be completed in February.

The overall project is expected to be completed in February.
