INDIO-- Three firefighters are recovering tonight after they were injured while fighting a fire that ripped through a garage on Paseo Real in Indio, just after 7am Tuesday. Flames covered the cars and spread to the attic.

"There was some extension to the attic but fire fighters were able to save all the contents, move them outside, and salvage the interior of the structure," said Mike Smith, the public information officer with the Riverside County Fire Department.

Forty three fire fighters contained the blaze after fighring flames for an hour.

"A partial stucture collapse occured midway throught the fire fight here and three firefighters were injured. All three fire fighters were transported to local hospitals," said Smith.

One fire fighter suffered a broken leg.

Five people escaped from the fire uninjured. Now the red cross is helping them recover.

"This family needs a place to stay we are going to put them in a hotel. They've lost food and clothing, we are going to help them with that, and beyond that they'll come back to us and we will see what else we can do for them," said Ellen Hughs, a volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Neighbors first spotted the fire. The family sat with the Red Cross, shaken up by what happened.

"We have a family and any time this happens it's a surprise. They're sleeping, their neighbors are coming in saying your house is on fire," said Hughes.

The fire caused $50,000 in damages, but fire fighters fought flames from the bedrooms, saving $125,000 in possible damages.

"The fire department comes and they are my heroes because they come out and do this if they had been here the other day when it was windy you could only image what the damage would have been," said Hughes.

Fire crews shoveled through debris to try to determine what started it all.
