PALM SPRINGS-- Thousands of bike riders took to the streets today. Cyclists road in the Tour de Palm Springs to help raise money for local charities.

"The event started 14 years ago when I road my biycle from Palm Springs to Florida. We started with nearly 300 riders. Today we have nearly 10,000," said Tim Esser, Founder of the Tour de Palm Springs.

About 10,000 riders helped raise money for more than 150 local charities. But charities aren't the only ones benfiting.

"We have sold out hotels across the Coachella Valley...We need a little jump start for this economy" said Esser.

Food and muscic helped jumpstart the event, with 40 bands playing in more than 200 miles of routes.

"The course was well marked, the volunteers were excellent, the weather was great, a little windy but it was a great day," said Deborah Stern of San Jose.
