Diet Monday: The Dash Diet
PALM DESERT - The Dash Diet is one of the highest rated diets on the market today. U.S. News & World Report named it the best overall diet for two years in a row.
Believers of the diet say it can help you lose weight, plus help you lower the risk for heart disease. Desert snowbird, Marla Heller, has been working to simplify the dietary approach to stop hypertension for years. She's a registered dietitian with a masters degree in human nutrition. It is only natural that Heller write her own book about The Dash Diet called The Dash Diet Action Plan, which is now on the New York Best Seller list.
Heller says she first learned about The Dash Diet from an adviser in school. Her book breaks the diet down to simple terms and makes getting healthier, easier.
"It was originally designed to be a healthy way of eating that would be taking advantage of a vegetarian diet and making it more flexible so everybody could follow it," Heller says. "Extra rich in fruits, in veggies, it has nuts, beans and seeds so you get a lot of vegetarian stuff plus you have low fat dairy and lean meats."
And when dining out, Heller recommends ordering a second serving of vegetables with your meal to make sure you are getting enough each day.
