Palm Springs Record Air Passenger Traffic

PALM SPRINGS - A record 700,000 visitors from around the world have flown in and out of Palm Springs International Airport over the past four months -- up 17 percent compared with the same time last year. 

In fact, February was the fourth consecutive month of record passenger traffic at the Airport, according to executive director, Tom Nolan, who noted that some of this success is due to the arrival of two new airlines, Virgin America and Frontier, who have begun service this season to San Francisco, New York City and Denver.

Other PSP incumbent airlines have initiated new nonstop routes, including Houston, Winnipeg and San Jose - and also increased capacity in existing routes. 

"The new service provided by the two new airlines, coupled with a resurgence in Palm Springs tourism are the primary reasons for the Airport setting new record passengers," said Mayor Steve Pougnet. "Much of this success is also due in part to the City's innovative Airline Marketing Incentive Program and we're thrilled to see these record numbers at the Airport." 
 
Within the last five years, the City Council has approved a host of capital improvement projects recently completed at the Airport, including a brand new regional concourse, a remodeled courtyard and termimal, expanded car rental lot, gift, food and beverage concessions, new advertising concessions and the addition of a free cell phone lot and free wireless service. 
 
"Palm Springs International Airport, unlike other airports, is a relaxing and stress-free destination," according to Pougnet. "It's one of the few airports in the world where you can step off your plane to 80 degree sunshine and spectacular mountain vistas and get away from it all - and these record numbers are just more proof that Palm Springs truly is like no place else. "
