Budget Battle in Riverside County
RIVERSIDE - Some difficult financial decisions lay ahead for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and District Attorney's Office.
Sheriff Stan Sniff and District Attorney Paul Zellerbach told county supervisors they will end the current fiscal year in the black.
Sheriff Sniff says his department managed to close a $5.5 million budget gap in the current fiscal year.
But the county wants a 3% cut in the department's budget which means another $5 million in cuts for the upcoming fiscal year.
D.A. Zellerbach says 38 positions have been cut or left vacant since January helping his department balance its budget.
According to the county's Chief Financial Officer, Riverside County will go into 2012-13 with a $13 million budget deficit and up to 200 county jobs may be on the chopping block as a result.
