INDIO--Police are on the hunt for the gunman who shot and killed a man in Indio Wednesday morning.
Investigators were on-scene all day at the Vintage Palms Apartments on Requa Avenue. They say a man in his twenties was shot and killed in the apartment's parking lot.
Police canvassed the apartment complex looking for clues in the deadly early morning shooting that left one man dead.
"Right now we're looking to see any possibilities of what happened," said Indio Police Department Spokesman Ben Guitron. "We don't know who the adversary or adversaries were. All we know is that when we were called at 2:38 this morning they heard shots in the area."
According to police when they arrived on scene they found a man in his early twenties lying on the ground of the parking lot with a gun shot wound to the chest. The victim was taken to JFK Hospital where he died.
"Man I don't really know what to say. It's not surprising. Now-a-days it's like, when is it going to happen more than, more than not going to happen," said neighbor Lupita Alcantar.
Neighbors say the man who was shot was staying with friends at the apartment complex. Juan Fernandez was outside his apartment that night. He says a fight broke out and he ran inside his apartment. That's when he says he heard the first shot.
"A bunch of people were running around and screaming it was crazy," said witness Juan Fernandez.
Fernandez says he heard about 7 or 8 shots from inside his home. Other neighbors stayed inside during the scuffle. They say they were too scared to see what was going on.
"I try to go outside but around here it's not really safe, so I don't feel safe coming outside," said neighbor Heidye Cortez.
The name of the victim has not been released, and police are still searching for the suspect or suspects responsible. Police also say they don't have a suspect description yet and they are asking anyone with information to please call crime stoppers at (760) 341-STOP.
