DANA POINT-- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman, Gregory Jazcko, toured the closed San Onofre Power Plant on Friday. The plant was ordered to stay out of commission until issues with the plant's steam generators are understood and addressed. Jazcko has the final word on when the two San Onofre nuclear reactors can reopen. After touring the plant today, Jaczko says there's no way to predict when that will be.
"The bottom line is that we will take the steps necessary to ensure public safety," says Jazcko.
One of the reactors was already down for maintenance in January when a leak was discovered. That leak lead to the shutdown of a second reactor. The problem lies in tubing that carries heated radioactive water from to a steam generating plant. Jazcko says more than 100 tubes were showing signs of wearing out prematurely.
"They have to demonstrate to us that they understand the causes. And ultimately that they have a plan to address whatever the causes are that will ensure public health and safety," says Jazcko.
As Jazcko and other lawmakers toured the plant, demonstrators gathered at the site, saying they don't trust Southern California Edison, and they don't want the NRC to allow the reactors to go back on line, until all doubts have are resolved.
