INDIO-- Valley high school students are getting a reality check about the dangers of distracted driving. On Friday it will be Cathedral City High School getting the visit, but today it was Amistad High School in Indio.

A mother who lost her son to distracted driving shared her powerful story with students. More than one hundred students listened as Martha Tessmer talked about losing her teenage son, and how it could've been prevented. Tessmer travels around the state talking to teens and parents, hoping her nightmare will prevent someone elses.

"Its one of those things where if you've experienced this depth of pain, well, if you have any compassion for mankind, you'd do anything to keep them from experiencing this pain," says Tessmer.

Deaths of teen drivers in California increased 16% in one year and distracted driving is the number one killer of teens in the country.
