LAGUNA BEACH (AP) -- Rescuers say they were able to loosen some of the fishing line that entangled a 40-foot gray whale off the Southern California coast before ending rescue operations for the day. Pacific Marine Mammal Center spokeswoman Melissa Sciacca says the whale was spotted off the coast of Laguna Beach on Tuesday afternoon, and appeared to be towing between 50 and 100 feet of fishing line. The whale's left pectoral fin was caught in the tangle and Sciacca says rescuers were able to free it from "a good portion" of the line. Sciacca says the whale is an adult, and appears to be in good health. Before returning to shore at sunset, rescuers attached three large, brightly colored buoys to the whale to help locate it when rescue operations resume Wednesday morning.
