Locals Tee Up to Support the Troops
INDIAN WELLS- American Friends of our Armed Forces held its 8th annual golf classic at Toscana Country Club to benefit 29 Palms marines.
"Eight years ago my wife and I met a couple of young marines and were so impressed we felt we wanted to do something about helping them and so we founded AFAF," said Walt Van Benthuysen.
AFAF has raised more than $1 million for the troops, with the golf classic being its main fundraising event.
"It's a good opportunity to get out and play golf. I always like playing golf. Can't beat a better day than this," said Steve Williams, a 29 Palms Marine Officer.
The sold out event raises a hundred thousand dollars to go towards the Marines, providing them with everything from emotional to financial support.
"It's used in a couple of ways, one is for the troops who are deployed
in combat zones where they will receive items like prepaid phone
cards, computers and dvd games. It also goes toward programs that assist
for families that remain behind," said Van Benthuysen.
Out of 120 locals who played to raise money, 20 are in the Marines.
"It means a lot for the Marines. You got organizations like this
that come together and benefit and help the Marines. It means a lot to
us," said Willaims.
