PALM DESERT - They grew up in the Coachella Valley and have known each other for decades. Sam and Lucy Montoya are celebrating a marriage milestone, their 69th wedding anniversary.
Family and friends gathered around the happy couple, now residents at Atria Palm Desert, to celebrate. The couple met when Lucy was just 12 years old. Lucy says she used to pass notes to Sam in class in order to set up dates.
The couple have experienced the ups and downs of life together. During WWII, Sam was injured by a bombshell in Okinawa, Japan and Lucy stayed in the hospital with him for three weeks while he recovered. Sam later received a purple heart.
One of their secrets to having a long, healthy marriage is saying "I love you" to one another every day.
