Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Closed
PALM SPRINGS--The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is closed and this time it's not because of the weather or for maintenance.
Car after car turned away at the base of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Folks were told to try again Tuesday, for now it's closed.
"I'm a little disappointed. It's a 20 mile drive and we'll have to do it another day, so we'll have to make some other plans for today," said visitor Rich Czyzewski.
Around 2,000 people visit the tram every day. Officials at the tram were forced to close the popular tourist attraction when a dump truck ran into a power pole and knocked down a phone line.
"Apparently when the truck came through and hit the telephone line it also inadvertently hit the electrical power line and that caused a power outage here at the tramway. That's not why we're closed. We're actually closed because the telephone line is going across the road and on the ground," Lena Zimmerschied, from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, said.
Many visitors planned their day around a trip to the tram. Zimmerschied said anyone who already bought tickets will get a refund.
"We just came down from seattle to visit. Get outdoors and do some fun stuff," said visitor Justin Jones.
Crews are working to get the roadway back open. Officials say the tram should be back open Tuesday.
