You just got called for a job interview. But, now it's time to pick out the perfect outfit. Don't stress, we spoke to stylists, head hunters and hiring managers here in the valley to give you the do's and don't's of interview outfits.

 

The interview is set, now the panic sets in. You start flipping through the closet, looking for the perfect outfit.

 

"What somebody looks like is the first criteria on which we judge them whether we're conscious of it or not so you know dress for success," said John O'Connor, Executive Director at the LGBT Center in Palm Springs.

 

Does that mean pants? A dress? Always wear a tie? Is it better to be over dressed than under dressed?

 

"You would dress appropriate to the position you're going for. If you're looking for a construction related job then dress the part," said Henry Greene, with the Indio Workforce Development center. 

 

"If you're looking to be successful it's better to over dress than under dress," Shane Lamb from Kimco Staffing said.

 

We took what we heard from the bosses to Macy's by appointment for help. Sure it sounds fancy and expensive but believe it or not it's free. And something most of us could desperately use.

 

"You don't want loud prints, you don't want to wear too much make up, you don't want this big purse you're lugging along so everything is focused on the interviewer looking at you," said stylist for Macy's by Appointment Kim Richards.

 

"Men come in every day and have no idea what to wear on a date let alone a job interview so the key for me for them is to figure out what they've already got, what kind of job this is. Are they comfortable? Is this a whole new field for them? What's going to make them feel more confident and if that means that a suit that's going to make them feel powerful then that's what they need to be wearing," said stylist for Macy's by Appointment, Kelly Mason. 

 

Professional stylists, Kim and Kelly, show us the looks that make good first impressions. For women, keep it simple.

 

 "It's a black suit and it has detail on the lapel," Richard's said. "A little piece of jewelry nothing loud and gaudy you want the interviewer to focus on you."

 

For a more casual look... 

 

"I pulled some pieces together, the plain pants, the seer sucker jacket, stripes are in and seer sucker is back again and i think the detailing of the zipper give a lot of detail to it, it's still professional, its a little more toned down then a corporate interview and the pieces can be used again and again," Richard's said.

 

On to the guys where the same rules apply. Keep it simple.

 

"For this corporate interview i pulled a gray suit. It's a little softer its not as harsh and commanding as a black suit so a nice gray suit with a slim fit is really what's the trend right now," Mason said.

 

And for something less stuffy.

 

"You can wear a flat front khaki pant, all men have khaki pants, whether they're dockers or dress pants. Again your belt should be in coordination with your shoes, but its a very polished look," Mason said.

 

Both stylists say pay attention to your accessories - less is more. And guys, you can never have enough classic white shirts in your closet - they go with everything!

 

"You don't want to go in there with a wrinkled shirt or a shirt that's too big or a borrowed tie, we want to make sure it's tailored and it fits you well," Mason said.

 To finish your winning look - the experts suggest you cover up tattoos. Also excessive piercings could turn off a potential boss. So whatever you decide to wear, remember confidence is always the best accessory.
