Coachella Valley Residents Honor America's Fallen Heroes
PALM DESERT - Thousands of people are gathering across Coachella Valley and Riverside County this Memorial Day to honor the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country.
Among the special tributes and services taking place in Coachella Valley is the 14th Annual Memorial Day Flower Drop at the Palm Springs Air Museum, located at 745 N. Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs.
This year's Flower Drop features the Missing Man Formation by T-34s and the Heat Wave Jazz Band. Forest Lawn Memorial Park provides the 3,000 carnations that drop from a vintage World War II era aircraft. Palm Springs Air Museum's original Chief Pilot Jim Dale (JD) will pilot the vintage aircraft dropping the flowers about 1 p.m. Monday.
The City of Desert Hot Springs City Council and Community and Cultural Affairs Commission are hosting a Memorial Day Ceremony in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives while serving their country. Proceeds from the event benefit the Riverside National Cemetery Support Committee, which builds monuments and makes improvements at the cemetery. There more than 155,000 military veterans buried there.
The ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park (located at 10101 Palm Drive, Desert Hot Springs, CA 92240) and begins at 11:00 a.m.
Thousands of motorcycle riders roared through Riverside Monday morning as part of a Memorial Day event that included a military tribute at the national cemetery. The 13th annual West Coast Thunder ride began at 8 a.m. at Skip Fordyce Harley-Davidson, 7688 Indiana Avenue. Last year's event drew more than 7,500 riders, according to organizers.
