Entrance to College of the Desert Closed
PALM DESERT - The main entrance to The College of the Desert off Monterey Avenue is closed due to construction on the campus. A COD spokeperson tells KMIR6 that an extensive renovation of the Monterey entrance begins May 29, 2012.
During construction vehicle and pedestrian traffic to the campus is being diverted to other campus entrances. Anyone needing access to the campus should use the Magnesia Falls, Fred Waring Drive or San Pablo Avenue entrances.
COD says the first phase will be to remediate traffic congestion. The remainder of the project will create a new welcoming landscape entry to COD while turning the space between the Communication and Cravens Student Services Center buildings into a useful assembly and outdoor student life area.
The redesign is one of several Phase One projects paid for by a $346.5 million bond issue approved by Coachella Valley voters in 2004.
The Monterey entrance will be closed from May 29 to September 2012 and will cost an estimated $3.5 million. It is anticipated that the entire project area will be open for use by the Spring of 2013.
