The price of a pack of smokes jumps a dollar with a yes vote on Prop 29.
"The reason that I am here primarily is for Proposition 29, because I work for the American Cancer Society, so a yes vote on 29 is really important to me," said Palm Desert resident, Jennifer Heggie.
But for others, the vote is no.
"Even though I personally don't smoke, I don't think bundling up more taxes on cigarettes is really going to solve the problem," said Scott Russell of Palm Desert.
Yes on Proposition 28 reduces the total amount of time a lawmaker can serve in the state legislature.
"28 I did vote yes on that too, I think limiting the terms to 14 years to 12 sufficient, I think 12 years is enough time," said Diana Lamar of Palm Desert.
Prop 28 reduces the total number of years a person can serve, but increases the number of years they can stay in one house.
"I think the structural problems are the money thats involved with getting elected, not the length of the terms, I'm fine with someone who knows what they're doing to be there doing what they do," said Russell.
And even though some voters didn't want to share their opinions, they said it was still important to vote.
"I tend to be pretty passionate about politics, I don't really want to go into detail about it, but I think this is a very important election, really hot topics, couldn't wait to come out, I was still doing research at the last minute, really looking forward to getting in and voting," said Rosalyn Fleming of Palm Desert.
And Fleming cast her ballot, adding her vote to thousands of others here in the Coachella Valley.

Proposition 28 reduces the total amount of time a person can serve in the state legislature from 14 to 12 years.

No votes 36.6%
Proposition 29 adds an additional one dollar tax per pack on cigarettes and other tobacco products.
Yes votes 50.1%
No votes 49.9%
