PALM DESERT - At least two Coachella Valley law enforcement agencies will be conducting driver's license and DUI checkpoints tonight, one in Palm Springs and another in Palm Desert.

Both checkpoints will run from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location in both cities. Officers will check drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and for proper licensing,

Offenders could face fines, jail time, license suspension and insurance increases as well as other penalties.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says the checkpoints are an effort to reduce impaired driving tragedies as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver's license.

Both checkpoints are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
