Coachella Valley Weighs in on Controversial Boxing Decision
Timothy Bradley is bringing home a championship after the local boxer upset Manny Pacquaio.
The fight ended with a split decision and with boos from the crowd in Las Vegas, but for so many locals here who've followed Bradley's rise this win is also a victory for the desert.
"It was a good fight and he won," said Sandy Enoch of Palm Springs.
But the judges ruling sent down mixed messages, with two judges calling Bradley the winner and the other judge siding with Pacquaio. The majority ruling means Bradley returns home the WBO Welterweight Championship.
"[It's a] very popular decision in the valley, unfortunately not Bradley's fault, but he lost the fight," said Max Nicholas of Palm Springs. M
For team Bradley, this is a moment years in the making. Just a few years Bradley was broke and trying to fight his way to the top.
"He'll get so much recognition and everyone will know about him, it's wonderful for the Coachella Valley," said Enoch.
The fight left Bradley in a wheelchair with a fractured left foot and twisted right ankle. The Cathedral City fighter walks away from the fight with $5 million and he could take home double that amount from a rematch.
"I'm proud because he actually took the fight. He got in and he did his best," said Ysamel Mecardo of Cathedral City.
