INDIO - Police are investigating reports of multiple shootings involving a police officer in Indio. Police spokesman, Ben Guitron, confirms that two people are dead, a man and a woman. One of the deceased is said to be a victim and the other the suspect in the shootings.

Witnesses first reported an officer had been shot in the face, possibly the mouth, as the officer was responding to a report of the initial shooting at the Las Brisas Apartments in Indio.

Guitron says an Indio police officer was injured during the initial response to the shooting call at the apartment complex near Monroe and Hoover. He is not confirming at this time the types of injuries the officer sustained, but said the officer is being treated at a nearby medical center.

KMIR6's Angela Monroe reports from the scene that witnesses say the officer was repeatedly hit in the face with a gun by the suspect. Monroe says Police are now saying no officers were shot, contrary to prior reports from the scene.

California Highway Patrol and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department are assisting Indio with the investigation.
