Victim and Shooting Suspect Dead, Officer Injured in Indio
INDIO - Two people are dead and an officer injured after a shooting at an apartment complex in Indio.
Indio police responded to the initial call of shots fired shortly before 2:30 Monday afternoon at Las Brisas apartments on Hoover and Monroe Streets.
Indio resident, Charmaine Bunker said she heard, "About 15 gunshots and I haven't ever heard anything like that in my life, it sounded like an execution style, whoever did that knew what they were doing."
Police say a man shot a woman in her vehicle at the apartment complex multiple times, she died there.
Officers rushed to the scene, and encountered the shooter.
"The suspect was still armed with a handgun, starting hitting and striking the officer with the handgun, not firing it, but hitting the officer," said Ben Guitron with the Indio Police Department.
The suspect was then killed by an officer.
The Indio policeman hurt by the attack was taken to the hospital, his injuries are not life threatening, but are serious.
Police did not give us descriptions or tell us the relationship of the victim or suspect, but Charmaine says she heard the woman was in her 50s and a very nice lady.
"I was in tears, complete tears, I just can't imagine someone just opening fire like that," said Charmaine Bunker.
It was a scary experience also for two sisters who were across the street and heard gunshots.
"It was scary because when they shot someone outside, I heard a big noise," said Valeshca.
"I'm sad because they killed the people," said Ruby.
Their dad, Luis, rushed to get them when he heard the news.
"I was concerned about their safety and of course about the safety of everybody else, but mainly you know them, because their mom called me and said there were gunshots on the apartments here," said Luis.
The questions remain of what lead to the shooting, and who the people were.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is now handling the shooting investigation.
Indio Police are handling the administrative investigation, and the coroner's office the deaths.
