California Teacher Travels to Asia To Survey Education Techniques
PALM DESERT - San Diego based educator, Keith Ballard, recently traveled to several countries in Asia to observe and see for himself why students in countries like China and India continually outrank American students.
Ballard, a middle school teacher in San Diego, has received more than 30 teaching awards for his work with minority and disadvantaged students near the CA - Mexican border. Ballard says he is "so fired up" about the growing achievement gap between American and Asian students that he traveled for one month visiting 22 schools, using his own savings and a video camera to document the crises. Among his career honors, Ballard was the 2003 recipient of the Milken U.S. National Educator of the Year Award.
