CATHEDRAL CITY - An alert police officer discovered a box full of abandoned puppies along side a roadway in Cathedral City early Sunday morning. The surviving puppies were starving, weak and crying, police say.

The box was found just after midnight Sunday near San El Jay Drive and 30th Avenue. The police officer says he was on routine patrol when he heard faint cries of puppies. When the police officer located the box, he discovered three puppies inside were dead but four were still alive. The box was hidden out of sight behind oleanders.

The puppies look to be about 4-6 weeks old. The surviving puppies are in the care of Cathedral City police officers, but will be taken to a local shelter for possible adoption.

Temperatures on Friday and Saturday were well above 100 degrees, extremely dangerous heat levels to be exposed to without proper shelter and water for any extended length of time for any size of animal.

If anyone has any information regarding the subjects who abandoned the puppies please call the Cathedral City Police Department at (760) 770-0303.
