Abandoned Puppies Get Second Chance at Life

THOUSAND PALMS--It's a story of unthinkable animal cruelty that we first brought you Sunday. A box of puppies were thrown into a bush and left to die in Cathedral City.
The puppies were dumped in an oleander bush at the end of 30th Avenue in Cathedral City. Three of the puppies didn't survive, the remaining four are on the road to recovery
Four puppies are finally safe in the care of animal services in Thousand Palms and will soon make their way to Save-a-Pet in Desert Hot Springs until they're old enough to be adopted out.
"We found out about the box puppies just like everybody else through the television, on KMIR the report on that, and right away our animal rescue coordinator contacted the pound and said we would like to help. We would like to rescue out the puppies once they come to your facility and that's what we've done," Tom Snyder, Director Of Marketing And Public Relations, Animal Samaritans said.
The puppies have had a rough few days. They were left to die, trapped in a box, stuffed in some brush in Cathedral City. When police found them, three were already dead.
Jenny Putrino Lives down the street from where the puppies were found and was horrified to learn about the discovery.
"It's awful," Putrino said. "I mean, my puppy is like a child to me so I take really good care of him and I just couldn't imagine anyone doing something so terrible like that."
The remaining four puppies don't even weigh 2 pounds but despite their ordeal they're playful, sweet and seem to be in good health
For the next month or so these puppies will spend time at Save-a-Pet. It's a bittersweet ending to unimaginable animal cruelty, a felony punishable with up to 3 years in jail. Police are actively looking for whoever abandoned the puppies. If you have any information please call Cathedral City Police.
Another case of animal cruelty in Palm Springs. Seven German shepherd/lab mix puppies were left in a box outside of Walmart. Luckily, all seven were picked up and taken to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and are doing just fine.
