UPDATE: Police Identify Woman Killed In Pedestrian-Vehicle Collision
CATHEDRAL CITY - The Riverside Coroner's Office has released the name of the woman killed early Saturday in a pedestrian-vehicle collision in Cathedral City.
The woman is identified as 39-year-old Lourdes Jauregui of Cathedral City.
According to a statement released by Cathedral City Police, officers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision just before 2 a.m. in the area of Converse Road and Date Palm Dr. As officers arrived they found the driver and his vehicle stopped in a northbound lane of Date Palm Drive, south of Converse Road.
Responding officers also found an adult Hispanic woman, with major head trauma, lying on the east side of Date Palm Drive about 30 feet south of the vehicle. Police say she was already dead.
Police say the driver of the vehicle appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Investigators say the driver admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages at a bar in Palm Springs prior to the collision.
Police arrested James Coley, approximately 49 years in age, from Newport Beach, for suspicion of driving under the influence. A separate traffic investigation will determine if there will be any further charges against Coley.
Police say an unidentified man was with Jaregui at the time she was struck by the vehicle. He fled the scene eastbound toward 69175 Converse Drive. Police say he is not a suspect, but investigators would like to speak with him about the incident. He's described as an adult Hispanic male with the moniker of "Rafa." Police say the witness is on parole according to an uninvolved third party.
Police closed all lanes of Date Palm Drive, between Converse Road and Gerald Ford Drive, for several hours during the investigation.
