INDIO- A string of car break-ins at the Indio Community Center has staff on high alert.

"There's more cars, especially in the evening, the entire parking lot is full, so there is a lot of chances for people to break into cars," said Robert Carson, communications coordinatoR for Desert Recreation District.

It happened three separate times at the Indio Community Center in just the last week.

"It does concern me a little bit, but with the economy right now, you kind of expect a little more theft and robbery going on right now," said Sandra Aalmanza of Indio.

"I would never leave anything in the car even if it's locked because i know they break windows to get in," said Carol O'Rourke of Rancho Mirage.

Officials say to make sure your windows and sun roofs are always closed.

"No matter where you are going people who break into cars look for opportunities and when you leave something valuable in plain sight that's the opportunity they are looking for," said Carson.

The surveillance cameras didn't catch the robbers on video, so the center is taking it up a notch. They are sending staff out here every half hour to patrol the area.

"Actually seeing someone starring at you while you are trying to break into a car is a pretty good prevention technique," said Carson.
