Red Flag Warnings Have Firefighters on High Alert
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — With forecasters predicting another day of thunderstorms producing lightning but dropping little rain, firefighters in California are on high alert again Sunday, while fire crews have lost ground on an expanding wildfire in the Plumas National Forest.
The National Weather Service is maintaining a "red flag" warning into Sunday evening for a vast section of Northern California that stretches along the Sierra Nevada mountains, west into parts of Lake and Mendocino counties, and north to the Oregon border.
California Department of Fire and Forest Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant says ten fires were sparked late Saturday and early Sunday by lightning strikes, though all the fires were contained at only a few acres.
Meanwhile, with strong winds blowing burning embers, a wildfire in the Plumas National Forest jumped fire lines overnight.
Fire officials say the Chips Fire has grown to about 9,200 acres, or more than 14 square miles.
