Local Couple Brings Back Olympic Spirit
PALM SPRINGS- A Palm Springs couple is home after spending a week watching Olympics in London.
Dale Maguire and David Carden had been to the Olympics before in Vancouver in 2010, but they say this experience is unmatched. They brought home more than 3,000 pictures, countless memories, and the Olympic spirit to the Coachella Valley.
"Everybody is focused on an outcome, and to be witness to that is a very humbling and exciting experience, and that Olympic spirit you just can't duplicate," said Maguire.
The couple saw eight Olympic events, including fencing, gymnastics and swimming. Their favorite games were archery and fencing, where they got seats close the grounds and saw a fierce competition until the end. In fencing, they rooted for the underdog from Egypt, who became the first fencer from the continent of Africa to win a medal, taking home the silver.
"What we are seeing is that dedication, that blood sweat and tears... It's just at that one moment you really have to be at the top of the game," said Carden.
But the couple said, for them, no athlete quite compared to those from the U.S.A.
"The americanA really have a special spirit and they reach in deep to really excell...They are so determined and they are so dedicated, you can always count on that," said Carden.
If you're wondering just how this couple scored eight event tickets, they planned a year in a half in advance. They say each ticket can cost several hundred dollars. If you want to go to Sochi Russia for the 2014 winter Olympics, start planning this coming January. You can enter the lottery for tickets at cosport.com.
