AC Theft Forces Business to Close
PALM SPRINGS- Reports of air conditioning units being stolen are on the rise across the Coachella Valley, according to air conditioning repair companies.
Kerson Fine Vintage in Palm Springs had two AC units stolen within days of moving into their new location on Palm Canyon Drive. Temperatures inside the store are reaching triple digits. Now Kerson is shutting its doors until the units are replaced.
"It's a common occurrence, but it's really upsetting and demoralizing to the area," said Christina Zifcak, Kerson Store Manager.
Robbers stealing air conditioning units are actually going after the copper metal inside, which they try to strip out and then sell.
It's a dangerous way to make a quick buck, but Patrick Somers of General Air Conditioning says he's taken more calls than ever about these types of thefts.
"Now it's weekly and it's all different neighborhoods, all different developments," said Somers.
Companies now sell air conditioning cages to detract robbers.
"Make yourself not inviting to thieves, keep the area well lit, well maintained. You don't want to make anything easy," said Somers.
