Storm Causes Fire, Flooding and Power Outage
This strange August weather continues with a sudden burst of rain that flooded streets Wednesday morning.
The thunderstorm was very short, but it did do some damage across the Coachella Valley.
Rumbling thunder rolls through the valley, bringing with it lightning.
In Palm Springs, a lightning strike set two palm trees on fire.
Kayla Bailey says it was so loud she thought it hit her house, not across the road.
"I saw a big flashing light and so then we went in the back yard and we heard sirens, and so we went in the front, and right over there, that tree was on fire," said Kayla.
Thankfully, firefighters put out the blaze and it didn't spread to the home.
Still, it was too close for comfort.
"That could have been, or it could have hit the house, or it could have started a fire in the house," said Kayla's father, Todd Bailey.
But in Desert Hot Springs, several families faced a flood, not fire.
"Every time it rains, this happens, it floods all my house," said Desert Hot Springs resident, Alejandra Serrano.
Serrano's home was flooded by the rushing waters, now she's not sure how to replace everything her family lost.
"I'm going to call my insurance, but I'm not sure if I have flood insurance, and I really don't know what to do, honestly. It's all a mess now, and I'm not working right now," said Serrano.
The storm is to blame not only for flooding Alejandra's home, and starting a fire but also a power outage in La Quinta.
Imperial Irrigation District says all 200 customers in PGA West have their power restored now.
This month's weather seems a little strange.
"It's extremely weird, it's not normal. Hot, humid," said Palm Springs resident, Alec Bailey.
"This year it's been so humid, a lot worse, so it's not normal that's for sure," said Alec's father, Todd Bailey.
And this not normal weather left a mess in its wake -- from power to fire and flooding.
