INDIO - American's Promise Alliance named the city of Indio one of the hundred best communities for young people. A closer look at the list shows it's the city with the highest percentage of Hispanic students, making it one of the best cities in the country for Hispanic youth.

The city's high graduation rate helped earn it the honors. Indio High School has a more than 89 percent graduation rate and is 92 percent Hispanic.

"We've been working with our students over the years to help them improve academically, to provide an academic challenge and get more kids into college and our statistics show that," said Rudy Ramirez, the Principal of Indio High School.

The mayors student advisory council and the city's teen center were factors in gaining the recognition.  The recognition also earns Indio a $2,500 grant. The money will go toward youth programs and the teen center.

"It's exciting. It's something that we've dedicated a lot of our services to...it came from a lot of dedication from a lot of organizations, including the city and school districts," said Glenn Miller, Mayor of Indio.
