Two ballot initiatives have education groups competing against each other. Proposition 30 and 38 would both raise money for schools, but only one can win.
Proposition 30 is backed by Governor Brown and teachers unions. Proposition 38 is funded by Molly Munger--- a civil rights attorney-- and the California PTA. Both raise taxes to fund schools, but each implements a different path to do it.
"What we do know is that the Proposition 30, if that fails, would be an immediate trigger reduction to schools, said Lisa Howell, Assistant Superintendent of Business, "If proposition 38 fails we anticipate having a trigger reductions as well."
Proposition 30 would raises taxes on high-income earners and raise sales tax by a fourth of a percent, and use the tax revenue to stop a $5.4 billion cut to schools.
Proposition 38 would raises $6 billion for schools by raising taxes on almost all Californians
If both passed, the one with the most votes would take effect.
