UPDATE: Isaac Weakens To Tropical Storm Status
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A state official says an 18-mile levee in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines (PLAK'-uh-minz) Parish will be breached to relieve pressure on it created by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Isaac. The official says the levee won't be breached today because of weather conditions but it will happen as soon as equipment can be brought to the site. The parish is a sparsely populated area south of New Orleans that's outside the federal levee system. It's been hit by severe flooding because Isaac has been moving at only about 5 mph. The Louisiana National Guard says they've wrapped up rescue operations in Plaquemines Parish, which was hit hard by flooding as Isaac stormed through.
Forecasters say Isaac, which was downgraded today, is expected to produce more inland flooding overnight. Its fierce winds have left hundreds of thousands without power.
National Guard spokesman Capt. Lance Cagnolatti says guardsmen are confident they've swept the thinly populated area and no one is still there.
Guardsmen rescued between 60 and 70 people in the area. None had any serious injuries, though an elderly woman who required dialysis was taken to a hospital. Cagnolatti says the search turned up no bodies in the floodwater.
Flooding has plagued the area since Isaac sloshed ashore Tuesday evening as a Category 1 hurricane.
Deputies in Vermilion Parish say a 36-year-old man died after falling 18 feet from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle before the storm. They say they don't know why the man climbed the tree.
President Barack Obama has told an audience in Virginia that his administration is closely monitoring flooding and other problems created by Tropical Storm Isaac. Obama told a rally near the University of Virginia that he had spoken on the phone with governors and mayors of the affected states and cities.
