Rep. Mary Bono Mack Concedes To Raul Ruiz
PALM DESERT - Just moments after the most current election results for the 36th Congressional District were released Friday from the Riverside County Registrar of Voters, Representative Mary Bono Mack conceded defeat to her challenger Dr. Raul Ruiz.
"Thank you for giving me the distinct honor of serving in the United States House of Representatives for 14 years,'' Bono Mack said in a statement.
Friday's updated election results show Ruiz's lead over Bono Mack expanding to more than 7,000 votes.
In a statement of his own, Ruiz claimed victory and thanked Bono Mack for her service to the district.
"Today, I had the opportunity to talk with Congresswoman Bono Mack, thank her for her dedicated public service to our community, and talk about working together for the benefit of our community moving forward after this hard-fought election."
County election officials say there are still more than 120,000 ballots to be counted, but not all include votes for the 36th Congressional District. Officials with the County Registrars of Voters say there are about 49,500 mail-in ballots, 60,000 provisional and 13,500 damaged ballots still left to be processed.
Bono Mack was first elected to the 45th district in a 1998 special election held to fill the seat of her husband, Sonny Bono, who died in a skiing accident.
