Locals Come Together to Help Needy Kids at Christmas
PALM DESERT--Families throughout the desert are helping give 9 million children a reason to smile this holiday season .
The worldwide Christmas project called Operation Christmas Child collects shoe boxes filled with gifts for needy children overseas. This week is their national collection week.
"I love these people because I don't know them, but they don't have anything and I have more than what they have so why not share," said Operation Christmas Child donor and volunteer, Dee Huff.
Dee is one of the volunteers collecting and donating boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The project began nearly two decades ago, collecting and delivering shoe boxes filled with holiday gifts to close to 100 million children worldwide.
Debbie Strboya also works with Operation Christmas Child. She knows the difference each box can make.
"One thing that really caught my heart is that it gave them hope in an area where there was war going on," said Operation Christmas Child volunteer, Debbie Strboya.
It's a message residents here in the valley are hoping to spread to as many children as possible. The goal this year is to collect 4,300 boxes locally.
"Some of these children don't have so much as a pencil, a pen, a marker, a toothbrush of their own, toothpaste, anything of their own," Huff said
Anyone can participate in Operation Christmas Child.
