Local Marines Need Rides Back To Base
PALM SPRINGS, 29 PALMS-- Soldiers Organized Services, sent out an SOS of their own Wednesday. They were in desperate need of volunteers to drive hundreds of Marines from the airport, to 29 Palms. But thanks to our local community, the troopss didn't have to wait long. The founder of "SOS" says within minutes of requesting drivers, the offers started coming in.
Hundreds of Marines are returning from their holiday break, but when arrived at Palm Springs International Airport, many had no way of getting back to the base in 29 Palms.
SOS transports hundreds of marines and their families on a monthly basis, but Founder Erica Stone says they came up short this time. Stone says they didn't account for all the luggage. Thankfully, the troops had members of the USO to give them delicious food and a place to stay, while they waited for rides.
"I sent an email out saying we need help. Instantly people hopped in their cars and Tulip Hill Winerery in Rancho MIrage rented us two big busses, so it all worked out," says Stone.
Stone says hundreds more Marines are expected to return over the next few days, and SOS will need more volunteers to keep this service going. Even if u can't volunteer to drive, you can still help cover the cost of gas.
